How the World Reflects Itself in Myra, Turkey

            We cannot look
At what we love without failure
                        Ann Lauterbach, "Mimetic"

Body waves of air
bonded to light
like a narrative of awakening.
You do not look into the sun;
you do not look behind the sunrise,
you look aslant, away
to find where you are
in this day’s embroidery,
slopes of green
and long shadows that open
to you like a morning
that matters, that like you,
like any other creature,
is known by all that surrounds it

You look at what you love
as you set out, down
through blood-orange orchards
and cypress spires
into summer
