Spanish Banks

After buying coffee
and Danish at
a 4th Avenue shop
we ate breakfast
sitting on a rocky outcrop
at Spanish Banks’ beach.

Love cares for no one
she said
quoting Virgil whom
I later read.

The tide flowed in
over the sand.

Seagulls drifted by.
Eight or nine anchored
cargo ships and tankers.

The sailboats moored at
the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club

Stanley Park and the
North Vancouver Mountains.

What about your wife
and girlfriend
she asked.

It’s just for now
isn’t it
she said.

We left before
the salt water stung.
