Christmas Evening

Sometimes it was very easy to believe.
Other times it was almost incredulous
To be celebrating another Christmas Eve
With our family so impecunious.

The Tannenbaum at the MB Church pageant,
Acclaiming our saviour's Virgin birth
Staged with verses of the New Testament,
Was a Seraph watching over the children's mirth.

Back at our home with our gift bags opened,
We ate candies, oranges, nuts, and chocolate;
Sang carols; though Santa and Dad never visited,
Mom and the siblings much-loved to celebrate.

Blessed since your Yea is yea, and Nay, nay,
And Christmas morning — still hours away.
